Set in East London just after WW2 the story tells of the close relationship between Stanley and his mother.
Stanley is the well-loved son of Diane, a prostitute, and her one and only mistake. They have lived through the London blitz, looking out for each other, sharing a bed not only for warmth but comfort during the bombings. Diane had done some work for the government but when she was no longer wanted she had returned to the streets. She saved hard and after the war was able to buy a house for them. By letting out the upstairs for income, whilst they lived in the two rooms downstairs with an outside toilet and tin bath, they had managed so far.
Thus Stanley grew up in the seamy world of gangsters, thieves and villans. He comes home one evening to find his mother being hit by a customer. Trying to defend her he is knocked out. There after begins Stanley’s journey as first a killer and then a very accomplished assassin, these activities reunits Diane with an old friend from her past, Reg an Inspector in the Met, who ‘helps’ Stanley with his education.
Stanley becomes very skilled at what he does, giving Diane concern for his safety. Any villians who don’t heed his warnings, perish…
Between all of this Stanley learns about sex, remembering what his mother had taught him. He has several women who work for his mother and live in the house, as playmates, so when he meets Frankie a local gang boss, for whom he ‘does a favour’ now and again, a life of killing is laid out before him.
