One of the nicest things about living here is the night sky. After my weekend game of petanca we stopped off at the Club Nautique for a drink – strange thing there since the fiesta the patrons seem to have vanished, people we normally see are no longer around such a shame – but I digress. 

After dinner my wife and I went up on the roof and sat on the loungers watching the stars.  We are in what can only be described as a halo of night sky, no background scatter just dark,  sprinkled with lots of twinkling lights. There is an aura of reflected light over the hill in front  and the maser behind, and to the left we can look down the valley towards the mountain range that separates us from the coast its above these that you get a sense of the towns behind them as the light scatter is quite large and bright. 

Looking up you see the dusty shadow of the Milky Way, like a faint cloud stretching from east to west. I can understand how the acient astrologers made pictures of the stars. Now and again a plane would wink its way across the sky and a satellite wobble or whiz over head. Sitting there in the quiet we could hear the owls calling to one another the odd dog barking perhaps a pig was near its finca, then suddenly the midges were there then whoosh, small bats came to feed, silently diving and darting around us. The first one to arrive made us jump but it was fascinating to watch them.

Then it began to get cold (nearly 2am) so it was time for bed.  The hunters arrived this morning around 7am so Autumn is on its way, next thing is olive picking but that’s another story…..
