Humour is a necessity when you are not feeling on top of the world. The ability to laugh is, to us, a must when we are not werry well.  So after a horrendous night I sort of plodded through to the kitchen where I could hear the fire being lit and the kettle on  Michael was making breakfast.  As the morning wore on I began feeling better got up, dressed, and wandered to the desk.  After the ‘hows yous’ we were laughing at the thought of us, many years ago, out in a rain storm searching for roof tiles then fixing a leaky roof. We couldn’t do that now we said staring out of the kitchen window lost in memories, and for a few moments we were back in adventure land being silly billies then I coughed….

The one thing about our life here is that we have had to source everything we need including those roofing tiles, but at least there were some spare to hand.  So what other daft things have we done? Well although you can’t see the roof very well, but halfway along the wall was an open chimney which would let rain and other things in, so Michael dismantled it covered the hole and replaced the tiles.  So imagine a really wet day rain coming down in stair-rods, and a leaking roof right where the old chimney had been.  We could not let it go as water was beginning to form a damp patch on the floor. so out we went thick coats on Michael got a ladder and found the tiles were loose in fact one or two were missing. so we had to go tile hunting.  Once they were found it was a case of placing them over the gaps weighting them down with a stone or two (yep the wind is that strong up here) at the end of which two soaking wet people went in and got warm and dry (we had a gas fire). Next day we mixed some cement and Michael made sure every gap was sealed. Memories…..

Christmas Fairs and Me and Barcelona

20161210_165638-640x480-480x560In early December we went to the Christmas fair in Tivissa, and guess what I found so I just HAD to have my photo taken with them (can’t get anything like this with Spurs).   After this we went on wandering round looking at the various stalls until we met one of our Petanca friends who directed us to the church.  Not sure what we would find we went in and joined parents and other towns folk who were there to hear the choir and orchestra perform Christmas songs and carols – we spent a wonderful 2 hrs there.

Then on the Saturday we went to Mora La’Nova  where we saw the children giving the their letters to the king and his helpers,  (their version of Santa) and having their photo’s taken.  The que to do this ran halfway round the hall.

The Moors were in this part of Spain for ages until El Cid drove them out but their influence remains and so do the fiestas.  Not only do we celebrate the 25th December but the festivities go on till the 6th January.  Christmas day is the religious festival but on the night of the 5th that’s when presents are given as that is the time when the three Kings visited Jesus.  Now this means we get two Christmases with New Year in the middle  NOW HOW COOL IS THAT????

For a week now in the early morning I have been taking singing lessons ( well whistling lessons actually).  Singing lessons? I hear you say, early morning??? well yes.  Take a good look at this little fella this is my Singing Teacher.

It all started about a week ago around 6am just as it was getting light.  From somewhere in the big olive tree outside the bedroom this bird started singing.  Now what you have to remember is the tree literally is right outside our window which in the summer we leave open at night (there is an anti bug and Sid screen built into the window if it was not there my wife would not sleep).

Waking up to birds singing is quite normal, Boris gives forth as soon as its daylight.  This little chap starts around 6am, like Boris his voice is clear, strong and musical, but there is a distinct call to it.

Anyway I got up and went to see if I could see him, but he had flown off into one of the other trees.  Next day was the same so by the 3rd day I decided I would join in, well as I was up it seemed natural. So there he sat in the tree trilling with me whistling back, got quite good at it actually.  But we still could not get his photo, until, that is, this morning.

It happened that last night was really hot so my wife was up around 5.30am making a cuppa when she heard him singing.  Looking out of the kitchen window there he was sitting on the roof of the little house happy as larry.  Well she knew where he was so she backed away and went to fetch her camera.  This might seem strange but we have learnt with this lot, we can be sat outside or working in the garden and up they pop.  Get the camera and whoosh they are nowhere to be seen, how she got Bobbin to stay still for his I don’t know.  Still it is nice to know they are coming back.  We were a little worried as when we returned home after our visit to the UK at Christmas there were no birds at all, not even Bobbin or Boris.  It took around a month for them to start returning, but I am pleased to say they are nearly all home again.

But there is one thing I do not know  who is he? any ideas peeps?  it would be lovely to know the name of my singing teacher……

Sunny Torquay? whose kidding who? lumpy sun the humans call it, Christmas is over and its STILL raining.  Oh well I suppose we will have to get used to it, but personally I really am fed up getting wet all the time, so with this in mind I decided to go to the harbour and find Wizz Gull. Whilst sitting under an abandoned shed roof I decided to write and perform a song for Mother Nature, who knows if she likes it enough she might just turn the tap off.

Where does Wizz Gull come into this? well he is a music writer and I needed a tune for my song so down the harbour I went to find Wizz.  He normally sits near a rather nice pub/eating place which over looks the harbour and ferry that goes to a fishing port called Brixham,  I was surprised not to find Wizz sitting in his usual place watching for the fishing boats to come into harbour.  He likes Torquay, its open, lots of humans about and they play some cool music, must be where he gets his ideas from.

Anyway, it took me two days to find him, but I eventually got him by the restaurant,  then we went and sat on the roof where we had a short discussion.  “Look I want to sing a cheer-up song not just for us but for the humans.” I said, “But I need a tune can you help Wizz?”  Wizz took a few paces backwards and forwards then stopped. “Yep man, I think I know just the tune”, then with his head on one side he began to hum it.

Whilst he was humming it I was busy writing down words, it’s called Lumpy Sunshine and goes something like this:

Lumpy Sunshine

Verse

Torquay is the town where the sun always shone down

The people they would sunbathe all over town

Summer was grand the people were tanned

But turned out Mother Nature had other plans

Chorus

Then it started raining

Only lumpy sunshine now

Verse

We birds are getting wet and the people getting sad

Don’t feel like singing feel so drab

Glum faces appearing all around

Nowhere is there a piece of dry ground

C:

Then it started raining

Only lumpy sunshine now

Verse

So come on Mother Nature give us all a break

Stop this rain for everyone’s sake

Put on your smile and dry us out

Then we’ll feel like singing and flying about

C:

Now we all need sunshine

Don’t want no lumpy stuff no more

Now we all need sunshine

Don’t want no lumpy stuff no more

Well I sat in my tree and sang it to her,  Wizz and his group provided the backing, I thought we did well all the others came out and chirriped along.  Wizz said if it works we might make an album,  well the humans do it and he thinks we are better movers than someone called Jagger???
